BIOGRAPHY-KATHLEEN STEELE
In 1975, Steele began to paint colorful, turn of the century buildings in
Monroe, Louisiana. This interest was precipitated by attending art classes
at the LSU-Monroe campus. During 1977, Steele returned to Kansas City,
Mo. to pursue an advanced degree in Dental Hygiene Education. This led
to teaching in Dental Hygiene programs for several years. Although her
interest in painting continued, it wasn't until 1994 that she again resumed
painting. At that time, she simply recorded local subjects that she
found interesting in Basalt, Colorado. Her first one-person show was
in 2000 at a local restaurant, and a number of paintings sold. During
the second show in 2001, Neil Diamond took notice, and purchased paintings
of Basalt as well as commissioned paintings of his property.
Since that time, Steele has expanded her interest to include historical buildings
in Aspen and Carbondale as well as scenes of interest during her travels.
Opportunities for Artist in Residence programs were offered at the Maynard
Dixon, Mt. Carmel, Utah location as well as the Luna Residency, San
Acacio, Colorado. The latter resulted in a painting of the oldest operating
grocery in the US, located in San Luis, Colorado. The latter painting
now hangs in the Hart Senate Office Building of Senator Ken Salazar.
Although primarily self-taught, Steele is grateful to her instructors in Louisiana,
as well CMC, Aspen. She is the great-great niece of Hoosier Impressionist,
T.C. Steele (1847-1926).
